Amavasya is the new moon tithi, the lunar day when the moon is not visible and the waning fortnight (Krishna paksha) comes to a close. In Hindu tradition it is a special day for remembering ancestors, offering tarpan (water offerings to the departed), giving charity and taking a holy dip. Many families light a lamp under a peepal tree and feed people in need. Some Amavasyas are especially important, such as Sarva Pitru Amavasya at the end of Pitru Paksha, Mauni Amavasya, and the Kartik Amavasya on which Diwali is celebrated. People look up this list to fix a day for shraddha, tarpan or charity well in advance. For every Amavasya, the table gives the time the tithi begins and ends, calculated in Delhi time.

Frequently asked questions

What should be done on Amavasya?

The most common practice is to bathe in the morning and offer water to the ancestors, known as tarpan. This is followed by charity, such as grain, clothes, sesame seeds or a meal for someone in need. Many people light a mustard oil lamp under a peepal tree in the evening, and some set aside rotis for a cow, a dog and crows. Customs differ by region, so it helps to ask elders at home.

What is Somvati Amavasya?

When the Amavasya tithi falls on a Monday it is called Somvati Amavasya. It comes only a few times a year and is considered very auspicious. Married women often fast for their husband's long life, worship the peepal tree and walk around it, and in many places they wind raw cotton thread around its trunk. A dip in the Ganga and charity are believed to carry extra merit on this day.

What should I do on Shani Amavasya?

An Amavasya falling on a Saturday is called Shani Amavasya or Shanishchari Amavasya. Devotees worship Shani Dev, offer mustard oil at a Shani temple, and donate black sesame, black urad dal, dark cloth or iron items. Lighting a lamp under a peepal tree and feeding people in need are also considered good. Tarpan for the ancestors is done on this day as on any other Amavasya.

How do I perform tarpan for ancestors on Amavasya?

After the morning bath, sit facing south. Take water in a pot and add black sesame seeds, a few blades of kusha grass and some flowers. Then, saying the names of your ancestors, pour the water slowly from your palm. If you do not know the full method, a heartfelt prayer with the water offering is enough, or you can ask a pandit to guide you. Feeding someone in need afterwards completes the ritual.

Is Amavasya a good day to start something new?

Traditionally, Amavasya is not chosen for new beginnings such as weddings, house-warmings or major purchases, because the day is linked to ancestors and inner practice. That is why most muhurat lists leave it out. It is, however, an excellent day for puja, charity, chanting and holy baths. Diwali itself is celebrated on the night of Kartik Amavasya, so beliefs are not identical everywhere.

Why does Amavasya sometimes appear on two days?

A tithi's length depends on the movement of the moon and the sun, so it does not run neatly from midnight to midnight. Amavasya often begins in the afternoon of one day and lasts until the afternoon of the next, which is why calendars can show different days. Our list treats the sunrise day as Amavasya, and you can use the start and end times in the table for shraddha or other rituals.
