  • Verification: Matches the staffnews.in reproduction of Annexure I (checked 2026-11-02). The primary PDF could not be opened from our build machine on 2026-11-03 (connection to the DoPT host failed), so it has not yet been checked against the primary document. staffnews.in
  • Restricted holiday: The owner's audit reports Holika Dahan (Monday 22 March 2027) as a restricted holiday in Annexure II of the same order; we have not yet verified Annexure II.
  • These are official holiday dates. A religious observance can fall on a different day (for example Janmashtami in 2027); festival pages show that separately.

This page shows the central government's list of gazetted holidays alongside the holiday lists of selected states: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. People check it to plan long weekends, trips home, weddings and family functions in advance. It is also useful for government employees, anyone with work at a bank, and parents trying to plan around school closures. The table gives the name and day of each holiday. Keep in mind that state governments usually publish their lists late in the previous year, and changes can still be notified afterwards. Islamic holidays in particular depend on the sighting of the moon. So for anything important, confirm the holiday with the official gazette notification or with your own office before you make plans.

Frequently asked questions

Who issues the central government holiday list?

The holiday list for central government offices is issued in advance each year by the Department of Personnel and Training, known as DoPT. It contains a set of compulsory holidays that are the same across the country, plus a few holidays chosen from a longer optional list. For offices outside Delhi, those optional choices are made by coordination committees of central government employees in each state capital.

What is the difference between a gazetted holiday and a restricted holiday?

A gazetted holiday is a day when government offices are closed for everyone. A restricted holiday comes from a separate list, from which employees may pick a limited number of days for themselves while the office stays open. The list covers many regional and religious festivals, so people can take leave for their own celebrations. How many restricted holidays you get depends on your department's rules.

Why do state holidays differ from central holidays?

Each state government draws up its own list based on local festivals, birth anniversaries of regional leaders and its own traditions. Bihar, for example, gives a long break for Chhath Puja, which is not on the central list. State government offices, schools and often banks follow the state list. So the same festival can mean a holiday on different days, or not at all, depending on the state.

Why does the Eid or Muharram holiday date change?

Islamic festivals depend on the sighting of the moon, so the date printed in the holiday list is an advance estimate. If the moon is seen a day earlier or later, the government often issues a fresh notification moving the holiday. Such changes sometimes come only a day or two before the festival. Around Eid, Bakrid or Muharram, check the latest notice from your office or local administration.

How are bank holidays decided?

Bank holidays are not identical to the government office list. The Reserve Bank of India publishes a separate list of bank holidays for each state, so banks can be shut in one state and open in another on the same day. Banks are also closed on the second and fourth Saturday of every month and on all Sundays. Check with your branch or the RBI list before a visit.

Do schools and private offices follow the same holidays?

Not fully. School holidays are set by the state education department, the board or the school itself, and they also include summer and winter breaks. Private companies give holidays according to their own policy, though national holidays such as Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti are observed almost everywhere. Always check your school or office calendar for the final word.
