About Navami
Navami is a Rikta tithi, so new ventures, housewarmings and long journeys are usually not started on it. Its presiding deity is Goddess Durga, and it remains a very sacred day for worship. Ram Navami, Lord Rama's birthday, falls on Chaitra Shukla Navami, and Maha Navami of Sharad Navratri is marked with kanya pujan, honouring young girls.
Next tithi: Krishna Dashami, from 11:54 AM to 11:03 AM, 4 Nov. Dashami is a Purna tithi, and its presiding deity is Yama. Vijayadashami, or Dussehra, which celebrates the victory of good over evil, falls on Ashwin Shukla Dashami, and Ganga Dussehra on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami is known for holy dips in the Ganga. It is generally considered a good tithi for starting new work.

Frequently asked questions
Which tithi is it today?
Today, Tuesday 3 November 2026, is Navami of Kartik Krishna Paksha. It lasts until 11:54 AM; then Krishna Dashami begins and runs until 11:03 AM, 4 Nov.
How is a tithi decided?
The Moon gains about 12 degrees on the Sun every day. Each 12 degrees of separation between the Moon and the Sun is one tithi, so a lunar month has 30 tithis: 15 in shukla paksha and 15 in krishna paksha. A tithi can last anywhere from about 19 to 26 hours.
What is udaya tithi?
The tithi running at sunrise is called udaya tithi, and most fasts and festivals are fixed by it. That is why the whole day keeps the tithi's name even if it ends at noon. A few festivals, such as Diwali or Janmashtami, follow the tithi in the evening or at midnight instead.
What are kshaya and vriddhi tithis?
When a tithi begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, it never touches a sunrise; that is a kshaya (lost) tithi. When a tithi spans two sunrises, it is a vriddhi (extended) tithi. This is why a calendar sometimes skips a tithi or lists one on two days.
On which tithis do Purnima and Amavasya fall?
The fifteenth tithi of shukla paksha is Purnima, the full moon, and the fifteenth of krishna paksha is Amavasya, the new moon. Right now the Moon is 37% lit and waning.
On which tithis do Ekadashi and Pradosh fall?
Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi of each paksha, so there are two every month. Pradosh vrat is kept on trayodashi, the thirteenth, when it covers the evening pradosh window. Sankashti Chaturthi is the fourth tithi of krishna paksha, fixed by the tithi at moonrise.
