Sharad Navratri 2027 falls on Thursday, 30 September 2027 (Delhi). Sharad Navratri is a nine-night festival in the bright half of Ashwin, beginning with Ghatasthapana, when devotees fast and worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga through prayer, dance and song.
Key takeaways

- Each year's section explains which rule gave the date and how the muhurat was cut to the tithi.
- All times are for Delhi; abroad the tithi follows local time, so the date can differ by a day.
What is Sharad Navratri?
Navratri means 'nine nights'. There are two major Navratris in the year, in spring and in autumn, but the autumn one, Sharad Navratri, is by far the most widely celebrated. The central story is of Mahishasura, a buffalo demon who had won a boon that no god or man could kill him. The combined power of the gods took form as Goddess Durga, who fought him for nine days and nights and slew him on the tenth.
Each day is dedicated to one of Durga's nine forms, the Navadurga: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri. Another tradition holds that Lord Rama worshipped the goddess before his battle with Ravana. Across India the festival honours feminine divine power, Shakti, and the victory of good over evil.
How Sharad Navratri is observed
On the first morning, families perform Ghatasthapana: barley seeds are sown in a clay pot of soil, and a water-filled kalash topped with mango leaves and a coconut is placed on it to invoke the goddess. Many homes keep a lamp burning for all nine days. People fast in different ways, some for all nine days and some only on the first and last. On Ashtami or Navami, young girls are honoured as the goddess in kanya pujan and fed halwa, puri and chana.
Gujarat dances garba and dandiya raas late into the night, and those dances now fill halls from New Jersey to Leicester to Toronto. Bengal, Assam and Odisha celebrate Durga Puja with grand pandals from the sixth day to the tenth. In Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, homes set up golu or bommai kolu, tiered displays of dolls, and invite neighbours over. Mysuru's royal Dasara celebrations run through the whole festival.

Navratri begins on the day when Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, the first lunar day of the bright fortnight, is in force at sunrise. Ghatasthapana is best done in the morning while Pratipada lasts. Traditional texts advise avoiding Chitra nakshatra and Vaidhriti yoga during the installation. When the morning is affected by either, families install the kalash during Abhijit muhurat around midday, considered the most auspicious window of the day.

Frequently asked questions
What is the right time for Ghatasthapana?
Ghatasthapana is done on Pratipada, preferably in the morning. The panchang is checked to make sure Chitra nakshatra or Vaidhriti yoga is not running at that time, since both are considered unsuitable for the installation. If they cover the morning, the kalash is installed during Abhijit muhurat around midday. These windows shift with local sunrise; this page gives Delhi's timing, so check a local panchang in other cities.
Which goddess is worshipped on each day of Navratri?
The order is Shailaputri on day one, Brahmacharini on day two, Chandraghanta on day three, Kushmanda on day four, Skandamata on day five, Katyayani on day six, Kalaratri on day seven, Mahagauri on day eight and Siddhidatri on day nine. Each form has its own story and favourite offering, and many people also follow a colour for each day when choosing what to wear.
What can you eat during the Navratri fast?
Most people avoid wheat, rice, lentils, onion, garlic and ordinary salt. Instead they eat puris or pancakes made of kuttu (buckwheat) or singhara (water chestnut) flour, sabudana khichdi, samak rice (barnyard millet), potatoes, sweet potatoes, fruit, milk, curd and makhana, cooked with rock salt. Rules vary between families. Elderly, pregnant or unwell people often keep a lighter fast.
Is kanya pujan done on Ashtami or Navami?
Both are correct, depending on family custom. Many households hold kanya pujan on Maha Ashtami, while others do it on Maha Navami. Typically nine young girls, and often one small boy who represents Bhairav, are invited home. Their feet are washed, a tilak is applied, and they are served halwa, puri and black chickpeas before being sent off with small gifts and the family's respect.
What is the difference between garba and dandiya?
Both are Gujarati folk dances performed on Navratri nights. Garba is danced in circles with rhythmic clapping around a lamp or an image of the goddess, as an act of worship to Mother Amba. Dandiya raas is danced in pairs with decorated sticks and is linked to Krishna's dances with the gopis. Evenings usually begin with aarti and garba, with dandiya following later in the night.
Why is Navratri sometimes eight or ten days long?
A lunar day does not match a solar day exactly. Sometimes a tithi begins and ends between two sunrises and is skipped in the count, and sometimes one tithi spans two sunrises. When that happens, the festival can stretch to ten days or shrink to eight. Puja follows the tithi, so dates for Ashtami, Navami and Dussehra should be checked in a panchang set to your city.
