Raksha Bandhan 2026 and 2027: date, muhurat and meaning
Quick answer
Raksha Bandhan 2027 falls on Tuesday, 17 August 2027 (Delhi). Raksha Bandhan, held on the full moon of Shravana, celebrates the bond between siblings: a sister ties a rakhi, a sacred thread, on her brother's wrist and he promises to stand by her.
Key takeaways

What is Raksha Bandhan?
Raksha Bandhan means 'the bond of protection'. The rakhi is a simple thread, but it carries a promise of care in both directions. Several old stories explain the custom. In one, Indrani tied a protective thread on the wrist of her husband Indra before a battle with the demons. In a much-loved folk telling, Draupadi tore her sari to bandage Krishna's bleeding finger, and Krishna later protected her honour in the Kaurava court.
Another tale says Goddess Lakshmi tied a rakhi on the demon king Bali and, as her gift in return, asked him to release Lord Vishnu, who had been guarding his palace. Over time the festival has grown well beyond brothers and sisters by birth. Cousins, close friends who become 'rakhi brothers', sisters-in-law and even sisters tying rakhis on each other all keep the spirit alive.
How Raksha Bandhan is observed
On the day, a puja plate (thali) is prepared with rakhis, roli (red powder), unbroken rice, a small lamp and sweets. The first rakhi is usually offered to the family deity. The sister then seats her brother, applies a tilak on his forehead, ties the rakhi, waves the lamp in aarti and feeds him a sweet. The brother gives a gift or cash and promises his support. Many sisters do not eat until the ritual is done.
In Rajasthani and Marwari homes, a decorated lumba rakhi is also tied on the bangle of the brother's wife. In Maharashtra and along the western coast the same full moon is Narali Purnima, when fishing communities offer coconuts to the sea. In parts of South India, Brahmin men change their sacred thread on Avani Avittam, which often falls around this time. Sisters abroad post rakhis weeks ahead, and video calls now bridge many oceans.

The festival is kept on the day the Shravana full moon is in force at sunrise. For tying the rakhi, the key rule is to avoid Bhadra, the period of Vishti karana (one of the half-day divisions of the lunar calendar), which is considered unsuitable for auspicious work. Once Bhadra ends, the afternoon portion of the day called aparahna is considered the best window. If Bhadra covers the afternoon, families tie the rakhi in the evening pradosh period instead.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to tie a rakhi?
The traditional guidance is to tie the rakhi after Bhadra has ended, ideally during aparahna, the afternoon segment that forms the fourth of five equal parts of the daytime. If Bhadra stretches through the afternoon, the evening pradosh period after sunset is the next choice. Because these windows depend on local sunrise and sunset, a time published for Delhi (as on this page) can differ in your city; check a local panchang.
Why should rakhi not be tied during Bhadra?
Bhadra is the period when Vishti karana runs, and Hindu almanacs treat it as unfavourable for auspicious beginnings. A popular story says Surpanakha tied a rakhi on Ravana during Bhadra, and his downfall followed. Whether or not one takes the story literally, most families simply wait until Bhadra ends. Some traditions consider Bhadra less troublesome when it is said to reside in the netherworld, so local practice varies.
Can sisters tie rakhi to each other?
Yes. Raksha Bandhan is about a promise of love and protection, and that is not limited to brothers. Many sisters tie rakhis on each other, and some women tie one on their mother or a close friend. Rakhis are also tied on cousins, sisters-in-law, soldiers, trees and teachers. Families without a brother often celebrate this way, and nobody sees it as breaking any rule.
How do I send a rakhi to my brother in the USA or UK?
Post it two to three weeks ahead, since international mail around the festival is slow, or order through a seller that delivers locally abroad. Your brother should tie it according to his own city's timings, because Bhadra and sunrise there differ from India. If nobody is around to tie it, he can tie it himself while you perform the tilak and aarti over a video call.
Should sisters fast on Raksha Bandhan?
There is no strict rule. In many North Indian families the sister does not eat until she has tied the rakhi and fed her brother a sweet, and the brother often waits too. Others eat normally. It is a matter of family custom and personal feeling. Elderly, pregnant or unwell women who wish to observe the custom often keep only a short or light fast.
When should a rakhi be taken off?
There is no single rule. Some people keep it on until Janmashtami, some remove it before Pitru Paksha begins, and others take it off after a few days. When removing it, many families avoid throwing it in the bin and instead tie it to a tree or let it flow in a river or other clean water. Following whatever your elders have done is perfectly fine.
