What is Vasant Panchami?

Vasant Panchami falls on the fifth day (panchami) of the bright fortnight of Magha, the lunar month of late winter. In the plains of North India this is when mustard fields turn gold and the first warmth of spring returns, so the day is treated as spring's arrival. Yellow, the colour of mustard flowers and sunshine, runs through everything from clothes to food, and in some places the day is also called Shri Panchami.

Above all it is Saraswati's day. She is the goddess of knowledge, speech, music and the arts, and many believe she appeared on this day. Students, teachers, writers and musicians all feel a special connection to it, and many families choose it for a child's first writing lesson, called vidyarambh or akshar abhyas. In some traditions the day is also linked with Kamadeva, the god of love, because spring is the season of renewal and joy.

How Vasant Panchami is observed

Families bathe early and wear yellow or light colours. An image of Saraswati is placed on a yellow cloth and offered yellow flowers, turmeric, rice grains, sweets and saffron rice or kheer (rice pudding). Children place their books, pens and musical instruments before the goddess to be blessed, and in many homes they do not study at all that day. The Saraswati Vandana is sung, a lamp is waved in aarti, and prasad (blessed food) is shared.

In Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Bihar, Saraswati Puja is a major community event: schools and colleges set up decorated pandals, students dress up, and the idol is immersed the next day. Many Bengalis wait to eat kul, the Indian jujube, until it has been offered at the puja. In Punjab and Haryana it is a day of yellow turbans, yellow rice and kites. Across the diaspora, temples hold group pujas and first-writing ceremonies for young children.

Frequently asked questions

Why do people wear yellow on Vasant Panchami?

Yellow is the colour of the mustard fields that bloom across North India at this time, so it became the colour of spring itself. It is also associated with light, energy and auspiciousness, and yellow flowers and sweets are traditional offerings to Saraswati. So families wear yellow clothes, cook saffron rice, boondi or halwa, and decorate the puja corner with marigolds. It is a simple, joyful way to mark the change of season.

How do you do Saraswati puja at home?

After a morning bath, spread a yellow cloth on a clean low table and place a picture or idol of Saraswati on it. Light a lamp and offer turmeric, kumkum, rice grains, yellow flowers and a sweet. Keep children's books, pens and instruments nearby to be blessed. Recite the Saraswati Vandana or a simple mantra, do aarti and share prasad. Sincerity matters far more than elaborate items.

Is Vasant Panchami a good day to start a child's education?

Yes, it is one of the most popular days for vidyarambh, a child's first writing lesson. A parent or elder guides the child's finger to trace Om or the first letter of the alphabet on a plate of rice. The idea is that learning begun on Saraswati's day starts under her blessing. In Kerala, Karnataka and other southern states the same ceremony is more often held on Vijayadashami, at the end of Navratri.

Is Saraswati Puja the same as Vasant Panchami?

In most of India, yes, they fall on the same day. In Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Bihar it is known mainly as Saraswati Puja and celebrated with community pandals and idols. In Punjab and parts of the North the spring and harvest side is stronger, with kites and yellow food. In the South, Saraswati is honoured chiefly during Navratri, so Vasant Panchami is a quieter occasion there.

Can you get married on Vasant Panchami without checking a muhurat?

Many families in North India treat Vasant Panchami as an abujh muhurat, a day considered auspicious throughout, so weddings, engagements, housewarmings and business launches are common without a separate muhurat being fixed. Others still prefer to consult their family priest and match the couple's horoscopes before deciding. Both approaches are followed respectfully; it simply depends on your family's tradition.

Why don't students study on Saraswati Puja day?

In Bengal, Odisha and some other regions, books and pens are placed at the goddess's feet during the puja and left there until the next day. Studying while they rest with Saraswati is avoided as a mark of respect. After a short puja the following morning, the books are taken back and study resumes. In other regions this custom is not followed, and children may read a little after the puja.
