What is Hanuman Jayanti?

In North India, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on Chaitra Purnima, the full Moon of the first lunar month, on the day when purnima is the tithi at sunrise. Hanuman, son of Anjana and the wind god Vayu, is Rama's most devoted servant and is regarded as a form of Shiva. Because he is believed to be chiranjeevi, immortal and still present in the world, many prefer to call the day Hanuman Janmotsav, a birth celebration, rather than an anniversary.

Children grow up on his stories: leaping at the rising Sun thinking it was a fruit, crossing the ocean to Lanka, handing Sita Rama's ring, and carrying a whole mountain back so that Lakshmana could be healed. He stands for strength joined with humility, intelligence and selfless service. Devotees call him Sankat Mochan, the one who removes troubles, and turn to him for courage.

How Hanuman Jayanti is observed

Devotees bathe early and visit a Hanuman temple. The deity is anointed with chola, a paste of sindoor (vermilion) and jasmine oil, and offered red flowers, a sacred thread, tulsi leaves, boondi or besan laddoos, jaggery with roasted gram, and bananas. The Hanuman Chalisa, Bajrang Baan and Sundar Kand are recited, and some temples hold a hundredfold recital of the Chalisa. Many keep a fast for the day.

Temples run community kitchens (bhandara) and take out processions. Dates differ in the South: Tamil Nadu observes Hanumath Jayanthi on Margashirsha Amavasya, Karnataka on Margashirsha Shukla Trayodashi, and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in Vaishakha, at the end of a forty-one-day observance. Some communities also honour Hanuman's birth on Kartika Krishna Chaturdashi, the day before Diwali. Diaspora temples hold group Chalisa readings that draw whole families.

In North India the festival follows the tithi at sunrise: the day on which Chaitra Purnima prevails at sunrise is taken as Hanuman Jayanti, since the sunrise tithi is treated as the tithi of the whole day. Many traditions also hold that Hanuman was born around sunrise, so the early-morning puja and aarti carry special weight, and temples begin the abhishek and chola offering at dawn. Recitations and bhandaras continue through the day. Purnima's start and end times for Delhi are given in the muhurat section of this page.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Hanuman Jayanti celebrated on different dates?

Regional traditions remember Hanuman's birth on different days. North India keeps Chaitra Purnima, while some communities also observe Kartika Krishna Chaturdashi, the day before Diwali. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana each have their own dates in Margashirsha or Vaishakha. None of these is wrong; each follows a long local tradition, and many devotees happily honour Hanuman on more than one of them.

Why is sindoor offered to Hanuman?

A well-loved story tells that Hanuman once saw Sita applying sindoor in her hair parting and asked why. She said it was for Rama's long life. Hanuman, wanting to do even more for his lord, covered his whole body in sindoor. Ever since, devotees have offered chola, sindoor mixed with jasmine oil, to Hanuman as a sign of the same wholehearted devotion.

Which prayers should be recited on Hanuman Jayanti?

The Hanuman Chalisa by Tulsidas is the most popular, and many devotees recite it seven, eleven or even a hundred times on this day. The Sundar Kand of the Ramcharitmanas, the Bajrang Baan and the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak are also widely read. If time is short, simply chanting Rama's name is considered dear to Hanuman, who is said to be present wherever Rama is remembered.

What is offered as bhog on Hanuman Jayanti?

Boondi and besan laddoos are the classic offerings. Devotees also offer jaggery with roasted gram, bananas, imarti, a folded betel leaf and tulsi leaves. Many temples run large bhandaras that serve puri, vegetable curry and halwa to everyone who comes, whatever their background. Sharing the prasad widely is seen as fitting for a deity who embodies selfless service.

Can women worship Hanuman?

Yes. Women recite the Hanuman Chalisa, keep the fast and pray to Hanuman, and many do so regularly. In some temples and families the custom is that women do not touch the idol or apply the chola themselves and instead ask the priest to offer it on their behalf. That is a local practice, not a bar on devotion; prayer and recitation are open to everyone.

How do you keep a fast on Hanuman Jayanti?

After a morning bath, many wear red or saffron and take a simple vow. Through the day they eat fruit and milk, then have a plain meal after the evening puja, though customs vary by family. The emphasis is on self-discipline, truthfulness and service. Elderly, pregnant or unwell people often keep a lighter fast or simply do the puja and recitation, and that is fully in keeping with the day.
