What is Akshaya Tritiya?
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day (tritiya) of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, in the heat of early summer. Akshaya means imperishable, and the belief is that good deeds, charity and prayer done on this day bear fruit that never runs out. In Rajasthan and Gujarat it is called Akha Teej. It is one of the few days treated as an abujh muhurat, auspicious from start to finish, so no separate muhurat is needed for important beginnings.
Many stories gather around it. It is said to be the birthday of Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, the first day of the Treta Yuga, and the day the Ganga descended to earth. In the Mahabharata tradition, Krishna gave the exiled Pandavas the akshaya patra, a vessel that never ran empty. On the Char Dham route, the temples of Gangotri and Yamunotri usually open for the season around now.
How Akshaya Tritiya is observed
Families bathe early and worship Vishnu and Lakshmi with sandalwood paste, tulsi, yellow flowers and offerings of barley or sattu (roasted gram flour), soaked chana dal, cucumber and seasonal fruit. Because summer has arrived, charity focuses on relief from the heat: clay pots of water, fans, umbrellas, sandals, sattu and fruit. Many set up water stalls for passers-by or feed people in need, believing that what is given today returns without end.
Buying gold or silver is the best-known custom, and jewellers stay busy all day. People also choose this day to open a shop, move into a new home, get engaged or marry; Akha Teej is a major wedding day in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. In Odisha, construction of the chariots for the Jagannath Rath Yatra begins and farmers start sowing. Families abroad buy a small piece of gold, donate to a temple or food bank, or begin a new venture.

Frequently asked questions
Why do people buy gold on Akshaya Tritiya?
Akshaya means 'never diminishing', and gold is the traditional symbol of lasting prosperity and of Lakshmi's blessing. Buying even a small amount on this day is believed to help wealth grow and stay. Families who cannot buy gold often buy silver, a brass utensil, barley or another small auspicious item instead. The intention behind it, welcoming lasting abundance into the home, matters more than the amount.
What is an abujh muhurat?
An abujh muhurat is a day considered so auspicious that you do not need to consult a priest or check an almanac before starting something important. Akshaya Tritiya is the best-known example, partly because the Sun and Moon are traditionally held to be in their exalted signs. Weddings, housewarmings, business launches and purchases are all common. Many families still consult their priest, and both approaches are respected.
What should you donate on Akshaya Tritiya?
Because the festival falls in the heat of summer, gifts that bring relief are traditional: clay pots filled with water, umbrellas, hand fans, footwear, sattu, jaggery, cucumber, melons and grain. Feeding people in need and setting up drinking water for passers-by are especially valued. Abroad, many families donate to a temple kitchen or a local food bank. Charity on this day is believed to bring merit that never runs out.
How is Akshaya Tritiya puja done at home?
After your morning bath, light a lamp before an image of Vishnu and Lakshmi. Offer sandalwood, rice grains, yellow flowers and tulsi, along with barley or sattu, soaked chana dal and seasonal fruit. Read the Vishnu Sahasranama or sing the Lakshmi aarti. If you have bought gold or silver, place it in the puja first and bring it into use afterwards. Then share the prasad with the family.
How is the date chosen if tritiya spans two days?
Tritiya often begins after sunrise on one day and ends after sunrise on the next. In that case the second day counts only if tritiya continues for at least three muhurtas after sunrise there; otherwise the first day is Akshaya Tritiya. Because sunrise varies by location, the answer can differ between cities, which is why the date on this page is worked out for your chosen city.
Is Parashurama Jayanti the same day as Akshaya Tritiya?
Often, but not always. Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, is believed to have been born on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya, so many communities celebrate his jayanti alongside Akshaya Tritiya with processions and special pujas. However, his birth is linked to the evening (pradosh kaal), so some panchangs place Parashurama Jayanti on the previous day when tritiya covers that evening. Both are observed with equal devotion.
