Griha Pravesh (housewarming) muhurat 2027: auspicious dates and timings

Quick answer

2027 has 35 auspicious days for griha pravesh (housewarming) muhurat. The most, 7, fall in May 2027. The next is Friday, 15 January 2027.

Stepping into a new home for the first time is a moment full of joy and emotion for any family. Hindu tradition calls it griha pravesh, the house-warming ceremony, and it is held on an auspicious day and time so that the home is filled with peace, happiness and prosperity. The day usually includes a vastu puja, a havan (fire ritual), the placing of a water-filled kalash, and boiling milk for the first time in the new kitchen. Families look up this list to plan finishing work, moving and puja arrangements around a fixed date. For each auspicious day, the table shows the daytime window in Delhi time when a favourable nakshatra and tithi overlap. Confirm the final time with your family pandit.

The rules behind these dates

For griha pravesh, Shubhkal looks at the daytime window, from sunrise to sunset, in which a fixed or gentle nakshatra (Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati) overlaps the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 12th or 13th tithi of either fortnight. Tuesdays and Bhadra are left out. Chaturmas, Kharmas, any adhik month and days when Jupiter (Guru) or Venus (Shukra) is combust are also excluded.

  • Nakshatras: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati
  • Shukla paksha tithis: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Shashthi, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Trayodashi
  • Krishna paksha tithis: Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Shashthi, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Trayodashi
  • Weekdays: Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
  • Window: sunrise to sunset, at least 45 minutes
  • Excluded: Bhadra (Vishti karana), Chaturmas (14 Jul to 10 Nov), Kharmas (Sun in Dhanu or Meena), adhik month, Jupiter or Venus combust

How this list is made, and its review status

  • Rule version: 1.1 (2026-11-03)
  • Tradition: Conditions commonly applied in North Indian panchangs (listed above); this is not the list of any single text or pandit.
  • Method: For each day the nakshatra, tithi and karana transitions are found to the second; the overlap of an allowed nakshatra and an allowed tithi is kept, Bhadra is removed, and windows shorter than the minimum are dropped. Times are for Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E, IST).
  • Rahu kaal: Rahu kaal is not removed from these windows. Rows where it overlaps say so, so you can leave it out when choosing the final time.
  • Review: Automated checks only: a separate script re-checks every window minute by minute. No pandit or scholar has reviewed these rules.

Frequently asked questions

Which day is auspicious for griha pravesh?

A day is considered good when, during daylight, a fixed or gentle nakshatra such as Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati falls together with a favourable tithi. Fixed nakshatras are believed to bring stability to a home. Tuesdays, Bhadra, Chaturmas and Kharmas are avoided. Our table lists the days that meet these rules.

Why is griha pravesh not done on a Tuesday?

Tuesday is ruled by Mars (Mangal), which Jyotish links with fire and aggression. Tradition holds that a new home should begin on a day with a calm and steady nature, so Tuesday is avoided. In some regions families also skip Saturdays or Sundays for a house-warming, so it is worth keeping your own family custom in mind when choosing among the dates.

What happens in a griha pravesh puja?

The ceremony usually begins with Ganesh puja, followed by vastu puja and a havan for the nine planets. The lady of the house enters first with a water-filled kalash, stepping in with the right foot. The doorway is decorated with a toran of mango leaves and a rangoli. Milk is boiled in the kitchen until it overflows, a sign of abundance, and the ceremony ends with a meal for priests and charity.

Do I need a muhurat for moving into a rented house?

Many families still pick a good day when moving into a rented home, though the rules are kept lighter than for a newly built house of their own. Often they choose a favourable day, do a simple Ganesh puja, place a kalash and boil milk. If a job or circumstances force an immediate move, it is common to hold a small puja later on an auspicious day.

Can griha pravesh be done during Chaturmas or Kharmas?

Traditionally, the house-warming of a new home is not held during Chaturmas or Kharmas, as these periods are considered unsuitable for major auspicious events. That is why our list leaves them out. If you must move during these months, many families shift their belongings without a full ceremony and perform the proper griha pravesh puja later, once an auspicious muhurat comes.

What if all our belongings cannot be moved on the muhurat day?

You do not need to move everything on the day itself. At the muhurat, enter the house with the puja items, the kalash, an image of your deity, some grain, salt and milk, and complete the puja. The rest of your things can follow over the coming days. Many families, as a custom, also spend the night of the puja in the new home.
