Mundan (first haircut) muhurat 2027: auspicious dates and timings
Quick answer
2027 has 38 auspicious days for mundan (first haircut) muhurat. The most, 7, fall in May 2027. The next is Friday, 15 January 2027.
Mundan, also called the chudakarma sanskar, is the ceremony in which a child's birth hair is shaved off for the first time. It is one of the sixteen traditional Hindu sanskars (life rites) and is believed to bless the child with good health, long life and a fresh start. Some families hold it at home, while others travel to a pilgrimage town, a family deity's temple or a riverbank. People look up this list to plan invitations, travel and puja arrangements around an auspicious day. For each favourable day, the table shows the daytime window in Delhi time when a suitable nakshatra (lunar mansion) and tithi (lunar day) fall together. Keep your child's age and your family's own custom in mind as well when choosing from the list.
The rules behind these dates
For mundan, Shubhkal looks at the daytime window, from sunrise to sunset, in which Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha or Revati nakshatra overlaps the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th or 13th tithi. The day must be a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, and Bhadra is removed. Chaturmas, Kharmas, any adhik month and days when Jupiter (Guru) or Venus (Shukra) is combust are excluded.

How this list is made, and its review status
- Rule version: 1.1 (2026-11-03)
- Tradition: Conditions commonly applied in North Indian panchangs (listed above); this is not the list of any single text or pandit.
- Method: For each day the nakshatra, tithi and karana transitions are found to the second; the overlap of an allowed nakshatra and an allowed tithi is kept, Bhadra is removed, and windows shorter than the minimum are dropped. Times are for Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E, IST).
- Rahu kaal: Rahu kaal is not removed from these windows. Rows where it overlaps say so, so you can leave it out when choosing the final time.
- Review: Automated checks only: a separate script re-checks every window minute by minute. No pandit or scholar has reviewed these rules.

Frequently asked questions
At what age should a child's mundan be done?
Most families hold the mundan in the child's first or third year. In many places only odd years, the first, third, fifth or seventh, are considered auspicious. Some families perform the ceremony only at a particular pilgrimage site or at the family deity's shrine, so the age shifts depending on when they can travel. Choose a time that suits both your family tradition and your child's comfort.
Which day is auspicious for a mundan ceremony?
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are considered good, provided a favourable nakshatra such as Ashwini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Shravana or Revati falls with a suitable tithi and there is no Bhadra. Mundan is not done during Chaturmas or Kharmas. Our table combines all these rules and shows the days with their time windows, so you do not have to work them out yourself.
Why is mundan avoided on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday?
Tradition links Tuesday with the fierce nature of Mars, Saturday with the heaviness of Saturn and Sunday with the intensity of the Sun. A gentle rite like a small child's first haircut is felt to suit calmer days, so these three are avoided. Customs vary a little between regions, so it is worth listening to the elders in your family as well.
Where should the mundan ceremony be held?
A mundan can be held at home, in a temple, on a riverbank or at a pilgrimage site. Many families go to the shrine of their kul devta or kul devi (family deity), while others travel to places such as Haridwar, Prayagraj, Varanasi or Tirupati. Wherever you choose, arrange the barber and the pandit in advance and plan around your child's routine and comfort.
What should be done with the hair after mundan?
The shaved hair is usually wrapped in a ball of wheat dough and immersed in a sacred river. Some families offer it at a temple, as in the well-known hair offering at Tirupati. In many homes the hair is buried in the soil near the roots of a tree. Applying a paste of turmeric or sandalwood to the child's head after the shave is also a common custom.
Is mundan done for girls too?
Yes, many families perform mundan for girls as well, especially in South India and in several North Indian communities. In some families a girl's head is not fully shaved and only a few locks are cut as a symbolic rite. It depends entirely on family and regional custom. The muhurat rules are the same for boys and girls.
